Do I need to fly a checkride?
No. The certificate is based on your military instructor records and, unless you already hold a flight instructor certificate, the Military Competency Instructor (MCI) knowledge test.
Do I need an FAA commercial certificate first?
Yes, a commercial pilot or ATP certificate with instrument privileges. Military pilots can get the commercial certificate first through military competency.
Can a military instructor check also renew my CFI?
Yes. A U.S. Armed Forces instructor pilot or pilot examiner proficiency check within the preceding 24 calendar months meets the renewal requirement of 14 CFR 61.197. I process that by video too.
How much does it cost?
The fee is $250 when your application is filed in IACRA, or $350 on a paper FAA Form 8710-1.
